Appliance Water Overflow Prevention Tips

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of NESA cleaning excess water Our team is faster to any size water damage and is dedicated to helping you when disaster strikes!

It’s the everyday house appliance that is usually relied on such as a refrigerator, dishwasher, or washing machine.  These appliances are used often and made to last for years that we may forget that these machines could sustain a leak or even break down. Take a moment to have a routine check-up every now and then to help reduce water damage incidents from occurring.

Refrigerator:
It's important to be cautious about its placement.  Moving the refrigerator too close to the wall may kink or break the water supply line. Keep in mind, that the plastic water supply line degrades over time and can crack or break.   To prevent water damage from happening, consider removing the plastic line and replacing it with a copper or stainless-steel line that has better durability.

Dishwasher:

Be aware of how much detergent is put into the dishwasher.  By adding too much detergent, it can cause water to overflow resulting in a dishwasher flood.

Washing Machine:

An overloaded machine is a common reason to have a leaking washing machine because the machine has been overfilled.   Have a limit to prevent a water overflow

At SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio, our team understands that dealing with water damage is highly stressful.  Our trained technicians are equipped with the knowledge to restore your property.  Do not hesitate to give our trained professionals at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call if you are experiencing any kind of water damage in your home or business.

Common Causes of Water Damage

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

Bathroom with SERVPRO logo SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is always here to help when disaster strikes!

With the year coming to a close, SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio has compiled a list of the leading causes of water emergency list.  These different appliances may trigger water outlets due to the connection of the water supply line.   It is important to understand that water damages that occur may possibly spread past a room and create larger damage throughout one's home.  A few common water leaking sources are as follows:

Washing Machine
Worn out hoses, especially if you are using an older washing machine, the gasket hose can become brittle over time and cause a leak. It is important to do a maintenance check every once in a while, to reduce any water damage.

Dishwasher
Over time, the water supply line in a dishwasher may degrade.  This can lead to water leaking into enclosed areas under the appliance and rupturing entirely.  Check this line twice a year by removing the kick plate at the front of the dishwasher and using a flashlight to inspect the space and surrounding areas.  If the area is wet with no explanation, this should be taken as a red flag.

Toilet Overflow
Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous.  A clogged toilet could potentially cause water to back up into the shower or sink and can contain sewer water that is extremely dangerous that is contaminated with raw sewage and bacteria in it.  Immediate response is critical especially when water damage strikes.

Being prepared can help prevent a disastrous situation.   By regularly checking on these areas, you will help avoid any catastrophic damages.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is faster any-sized disaster, and we are here to help 24/7/365 to make it "Like it never even happened."

Fire Pit Safety Tips

5/27/2022 (Permalink)

Fire flames and SERVPRO logo Do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio when fire damage strikes, we are always here to help!

What a great way to kick off the holiday weekend by jumping into the pool and barbecuing on the grill?

Some of us may be uncovering our fire pits and looking forward to spending time with family and friends gathering around them. Practicing fire safety is important.  Below are a few tips for fire pit safety:

The fire pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires.

Burn only dry material; damp material will create excess smoke.

Do not use lighter fluid or gasoline to start the fire, as it can burn out of control or even result in explosions. Do not burn tires, aerosols, or anything containing paint or foam to avoid toxic fumes which could also explode and cause injury.

Wear non-flammable clothing while starting, sitting near, or extinguishing the fire.

Do not leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.

Keep the proper fire extinguishing equipment, or at least a water hose, handy in case of an emergency.

Be safe and use good judgment while using a fire pit.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio cares deeply for our community and is available 24/7 if an emergency should occur.  We are here to help. Give our team of trained professionals a call, we are dedicated to helping you when disaster strikes!

smoke odor NESA At SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio, we are available 24 hours and 7 days a week!

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Protect your Business During Winter Months

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

The winter months may call for some businesses to take some standard precautionary measures to help protect their company.  This may include basic maintenance checks and preparation to help ensure your business and employees remain safe.  A few tips include:

  • Check your business property for down tree limbs and branches.  Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure.  Leaves or debris accumulates causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas.  Install mats on non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present

Lightning Truths and Myths

purple sky and lightning SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is always here to help!

It's important that we know our facts about the weather patterns to prepare for any future emergencies.  Learn the common myths and facts about lightning during spring!

Myth: If it's not raining, then there is no danger from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.  This is especially true in the western United States where thunderstorms sometimes produce very little rain.

Myth: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck by lightning.
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires proved no protection from lightning.  The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.  Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

Myth: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact: "Heat lightning" is a term used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.

Leaking Sink?

SERVPRO employee working SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is dedicated to helping our community when disaster strikes!

Have you ever had to deal with a leak underneath the sink before?  It may go unnoticed for a while because it may be deep in the back or just a tiny leak.  By the time it has been discovered, potential damage has occurred leading to a costly mess.  It’s a good idea to have a routine check-up under the sink and behind the cabinets to make sure there is no moisture.  However, if there is water damage here are a few things tips:

Clear out the area under your sink.  This will give you more space and a better view to access the pipes around.

Find the source.  This oftentimes could be due to a clog, a loose compression nut, or even a pipe that is not fitted correctly.

Repair the leak.  After the leak has been spotted, it is important to get this fixed to prevent further water damage.

If you have tried locating the leak but are still struggling to find the leak or the problem may consist of more complications, consider calling a professional plumber to help with the situation.

Does Your San Antonio Home Have A Mold Problem?

6/28/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO employee working If you see any signs of mold, call SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio today!

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all molds from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all molds, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Rain vs. Flood Damage

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

lighting field SERVPRO Northeast San Antoniologo We are dedicated to helping our community when disaster strikes!

Do you understand the difference between rain damage and flood damage?

Rain damage is caused by falling water. A leaky roof or window can cause rain to intrude into your home. Gutters and downspouts can also be a big contributing factor to rain damage. It is very important to clean your gutters and downspouts to keep the rain away from your walls and windows.

Flood damage is caused by rising water. Improper grading, failing drainage, or rising creek water are all examples of how flood damage can occur in your home. Flood damage can also cause cracks to your foundation allowing excess water to intrude into your home.

If you or anyone you know experiences either rain damage or flood damage, contact SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio!  Our team is dedicated to helping you!  Do not hesitate to give our experts a call when disaster strikes! We want to help you restore your home “Like it never even happened.

Mold Removal vs. Remediation

6/15/2021 (Permalink)

containment block out mold SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is here to help our community when disaster strikes!

Many people do not know that there is a difference between “mold removal” and remediation. Mold spores exist naturally everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, as they are microscopic. This means that removing 100% of mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration companies will advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee they can completely remove all mold. This is simply not true.

Qualified restoration companies understand the science behind mold growth and the makeup of mold. All SERVPRO franchises provide thorough training on how to properly remediate mold. The remediation of mold focuses on getting the levels of mold back to natural and normal levels.

Since every mold damage scenario is different, each requires a different solution but our general mold remediation process stays consistent here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio.

  1. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  2. Mold Containment
  3. Air Filtration
  4. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  5. Cleaning Contents and Belongings
  6. Restoration

Here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio, our technicians receive advanced training to deal with mold issues in a home or business.  Committed to providing excellent services, SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio has the state-of-the-art technology and crew to help you make it "Like it never even happened."

A thunderstorm that produces a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 knots), and/or hail at least ¾" in diameter. Structural wind damage may imply the occurrence of a severe thunderstorm. A thunderstorm wind equal to or greater than 40 mph (35 knots) and/or hail of at least ½" is defined as approaching severe.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch

This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. The size of the watch can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review safety rules and be prepared to move to a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

This is issued when either a severe thunderstorm is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or a spotter reports a thunderstorm producing hail 3/4 inch or larger in diameter and/or winds equal to or exceed 58 miles an hour; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Lightning frequency is not a criterion for issuing a severe thunderstorm warning. They are usually issued for a duration of one hour. They can be issued without a Severe Thunderstorm Watch being already in effect.

No matter how big or small a fire is, a workplace fire could be catastrophic for your business. Fire drills are an important part of working in a commercial building as they can keep people safe in case of an emergency.  However, they are often ignored.  To prevent any employees from getting injured or fatalities, it’s important to be prepared.  Here are a few fire drill tips for the workplace to take seriously and limit confusion in case of a fire emergency.

  1. Prepare an evacuation plan

It is important to come up with a plan.  By creating a plan, it is important to be as detailed as possible to create little to no confusion.  Outline exit routes in the building and make a clear outline of actions that employees will need to take to get to the escape destination.  Ensure the plan includes the phone number for commercial building restoration services as well.

  1. Train and communicate with your employees

Once the plan has been created, introduce the fire drill to the staff.  Help the team understand the importance of the fire drill and ensure to follow the foolproof plan.   Before the first fire drill, communicate with the staff in advance.  This will prepare them to act in accordance with the set procedure.

Kitchen Appliance Maintenance

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

dish washer over flow When disaster strikes, our team is always here to help!

Some home floods commonly occur in the kitchen due to their many water outlets.  For most homes, the kitchen commonly incorporates multiple appliances that connect to a water supply line.   It is important to understand that water damages that occur in the kitchen may possibly spread past the kitchen and create larger damages throughout one's home.  Keep your home prepared by periodically checking the appliances to help reduce water damage incidents from occurring.   However, a few common items that may lead to a kitchen flood are as follows:
Dishwasher
Over time, the water supply line in a dishwasher may degrade.  This can lead to water leaking into enclosed areas under the appliance and rupture entirely.  Check this line twice a year by removing the kick plate at the front of the dishwasher and use a flashlight to inspect the space and surrounding areas.  If the area is wet with no explanation, this should be taken as a red flag.  The dishwasher water supply line shut off should be located under the kitchen sink; turn it off and call a plumber.
 Under Sink System
Underneath the sink, you may find a water filtration system.  As time passes, the lines can degrade and rupture.  A crack in the line can lead to flooding and potentially much worse.  Check the sink twice a year to avoid any costly damages.
 Refrigerator
Moving the refrigerator may be tricky sometimes.  It's important to be cautious about its placement.  Moving the refrigerator too close to the wall may kink or break the water supply line.  However, having the refrigerator too far out may cause potential over-stress on the line and potentially cause the line to rupture.    Keep in mind, the plastic water supply line degrades over time and can crack or break.   To prevent water damages from potentially happening, it is advisable to remove the plastic line and replace it with a copper or stainless-steel line that has better durability.
Being prepared can help prevent a disastrous situation.   By regularly checking on these appliances, you will help avoid any catastrophic damages.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is faster to any sized disaster, and we are here to help 24/7/365 to make it "Like it never even happened."

Hot Water Heater Replacement

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

When was the last time you changed your hot water heater?  Has it been a while?  It’s one of those appliances that may be remained unseen or hidden away in the attic.  However, it’s important to make sure to keep up regular maintenance for many reasons.  Homeowners can wake up in the middle of the night or even come home to water all over their home.  Depending on the size, it can possibly leave up to 50+ gallons of water.   Below are a few telling signs that it may be time to change out the hot water heater in your home.

  • Typically, a gas hot water heater can last about 8 to 12 years, while an electric model will last slightly longer from about 10 to 15 years. If your water heater is getting up in years, it may be time to replace it before it breaks
  • If a puddle surrounds the base of the hot water heater, it is important to take action immediately
  • If there is no hot water while using the tap, this may be an indicator it’s time to get the hot water heater checked
  • Signs of tinted water coming from your hot water tap means there may be rust in the hot water heater, which may show possible aging and a signal of an oncoming leak
  • Gurgling or popping noises coming from your water heater are caused by the buildup of hard water sediment heating up and exploding inside your water heater tank

It is always good to be prepared, because disasters may strike when we least expect them.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is dedicated to helping you when disaster strikes.  Give our trained professionals a call if you ever experience any kind of water damage.

Chimney Fires in San Antonio

1/12/2021 (Permalink)

Removing Soot Available 24/7 365 days, SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is always here to help when fire disaster strikes!

January temperatures are dropping, the air is finally crisp and Texans can say winter weather has finally arrived.  As temperatures drop in San Antonio, fireplaces are being used. That means that chimney fires can become a concern for many homeowners. Chimney fires are caused by creosote, a combustible substance that is formed by gases during the burning process. This substance hardens to the chimney liner and poses a serious fire risk. Here are a few ways that can help you prevent chimney fires:

- Clean your chimney: The chimney should be inspected every year. Making sure your chimney is safe and cleaning it when it becomes a possible hazard is a great way to prevent a fire.

- Use dry wood: If the wood is wet, it will not burn as hot as the dry wood and will produce much more smoke. This increase in smoke can lead to an increase in creosote production.

- Use a creosote remover powder: This powder is to be placed on the wood and burned at a high temperature. This helps turn the creosote that may be forming in the chimney into powder which can reduce the buildup.

All of these tips can reduce your chances of a chimney fire, but the most important one is the first. Always make sure your chimney is inspected and cleaned regularly to ensure the safety of your household.  If your home suffers from a fire emergency give SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call at (210) 653-4651.

Winter Comercial Pipe Concerns

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

The New Year has surely brought colder temperatures to Texas.   Winter weather can bring beautiful snow (like some parts of Texas experienced this past weekend) but this weather can also cause other issues.   Having temperatures below freezing can risk frozen pipes, which can create a disaster to your home or business.

Frozen pipes occur when exposed to cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in areas such as attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.  A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow of pressure between the water source and the blockage.

If winter weather causes water damage to your home or business give SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call.  Our IICRC Certified technicians have years of experience and equipment to restore your home or business to the preloss conditions.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is always here to help!

Four Classification of Water

7/21/2020 (Permalink)

While there are three basic categories of water (clean, grey, black), there are also four classifications of water damages.   The IICRC’s S-500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration separates water damage into four distinct classes. Each class is based on the severity of the water damage, and they determine what steps must be followed in the mitigation and restoration process.

THE 4 PRIMARY CLASSIFICATIONS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects only part of a room or area; a little amount of carpet or carpet pads may or may not be wet.  Also, larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.
  • Class 2 involves a significant amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. An entire room of carpet and cushion pad is affected. Water has risen up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves the largest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation.  This water loss has saturated an entire area.   Water may have come from overhead which may impact ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushions, and subfloor.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations. Wet materials with low permeance or porosity such as hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete. Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio has the knowledge, experience, and proper equipment to locate any hidden moisture lurking out of sight and clean up water damage of any size and get it done right the first time.  If you or anyone you know experiences water damages, give our team a call.

Tropical Storm Preparation

6/15/2020 (Permalink)

There is no stopping a tropical storm, but there are measures you can take to be prepared for one.  Between the months of June through November, we cast a close eye on the gulf to observe potential disturbances over the seas.  There are times when a storm forms over a body of water and fails to become anything after a few days, but then there are the ones that form and become what could potentially be trouble ashore.   When the storm hits tropical storm status, it can pack sustaining winds to about 73mph causing heavy rain, power outages, or serious harm.

What you should know about tropical storms and how to prepare for them?

A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained surface winds ranging from 39-73 mph.  Evacuation is not likely during a tropical storm, but there could potentially be a small chance that an order is given.  If there is, be familiar with an evacuation route.

It’s always a good idea to take have some cash handy.  The ATM could potentially be useless if the power goes out.  A good rule of thumb is to have enough to feed and/or provide your family for two weeks.

Keep a device that will allow you to stay updated with the local news about the weather conditions.  By having some batteries at hand, this could help electronics running in case the power goes out.

After the storm has passed by, be sure that the area is clear before going out. Be careful and watch for any downed power lines.  If you are to see any, report this for safety reasons.

Although this may not be nearly as intense as a hurricane, be careful and prepared.  Need more information about what to do about preparing for a tropical storm?  Give our team a call!

Small Water Damages Become Nightmare for Business

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment placed to help dry water damage in business SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio has the equipment and tools to help dry out the water damage in your business!

What happens when those small water damages go unnoticed, or moisture soaks into a building’s structural components where it cannot be detected by the naked eye?  These incidents may sound relatively harmless, but given time, excess moisture can lead to serious problems.

In as little as 24 to 48 hours, microscopic mold spores, naturally present in all structures, can grow into visible mold.  Fueled by the moisture, these fungi feed on a variety of building subcomponents including wood, paint, paper, carpet padding, and contents.

While the debate rages on regarding impact mold have on human health, mold and mildew growth are recognized as major contributors to indoor air quality problems.  These nightmares happen every day as a direct result of those small water damages that gradually take their toll on buildings and homes.  The recipe for disaster is the combination of excess moisture, a food source for mold found in organic building materials (such as wood, drywall, some types of insulation), and a time delay in removing the moisture.

Give SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call if you have more questions about mold remediation today.  Our team is dedicated to help your business!

Fireplace Safety Tips

Lit up fireplace, with Christmas decorations and stockings hanging Stay warm but safe this holiday season!

Everyone enjoys a good fire around the fireplace when temperatures have fallen.  What’s not to enjoy about feeling cozy and warm during the winter months? Fireplaces may be used to provide warmth during this time of year.  But have you considered that this could be a potential fire hazard?   Listed below are some tips about fireplace safety to use to keep you and your family safe.

  • Crack open a window while the fire is burning.
  • Be sure the damper or flue is open before lighting or starting a fire, and until embers have completely stopped burning, to draw smoke out of the house.
  • Check the damper by looking up into the chimney with a flashlight or mirror.
  • Use smaller pieces of dry and well-aged wood for home fire safety, avoiding wet or green wood, which causes more smoke and soot buildup in the chimney.
  • Have a professional check the chimney annually.
  • When cleaning a fireplace, remove ashes from previous fires, keeping levels to 1 inch or less for less smoke
  • Check for animal nests or other blockages that could prevent smoke from escaping.
  • Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything that is potentially flammable.
  • Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended and be sure it’s completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Home fireplace safety should include keeping a fire extinguisher on hand.

  • Do not leave the fryer unattended; temperature should also be monitored closely.
  • If any smoke, at all, comes from the heating pot of oil, turn the burner off immediately as oil may be overheating.
  • Cover any skin that is exposed; it is encouraged to use a pair of gloves that are designed for high heat.

Space Heater Safety

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

As the temperatures begin to drop during this time of year, space heaters are coming out.  To make the atmosphere a more comfortable temperature, space heaters are an easy to use a product that can quickly generate a warm space on a colder day.  But keep in mind, although space heaters are a common way to supplement heat, they can also cause quite a bit of danger.  Fire departments urge everyone to avoid plugging a space heater into a power strip.  Power strips are not designed to handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat or worst, catch fire due to the added energy flow.

Stay safe this holiday season!   Be cautious when using a space heater or alternative heat as a supplement.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is dedicated to helping the community out, give our team of trained professionals a call if you have questions about space heaters.

Fire Extinguisher and Classes of Fires

11/19/2019 (Permalink)

Rainy skies, SERVPRO crew talking to customer in front of house. You can always count our crew to help you after a fire loss.

Did you know that if you encounter a fire with the wrong type of fire extinguisher you could make the fire worse? For example, use an extinguisher that contains only water on a flammable liquid fire and you’ll spread the fire and put yourself in further danger.  However, the fires are divided into five classes and fire extinguishers are specifically made to take out one or more of the fire classes. Below is a list of fire classes and the extinguishers that put them out.  Each fire extinguisher has labels designated for the type of fire to use the extinguisher on.  Double-check the extinguisher you’re about to use to make sure it’s designed to fight the type of fire. If you are unclear how to deal with the fire it is best to be safe and evacuate.

Class of Fire: A (A in a green triangle)
Fires of ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, cardboard, most plastics, and cloth
Extinguishers to Use: Water, Foam Spray, ABC Powder, or Wet Chemical

Class of Fire: B (B in a red square)
Fires of flammable liquids like petroleum, kerosene, grease, and others (but not alcohol or cooking oil)
Extinguishers to Use: Foam Spray, ABC Powder, or Carbon Dioxide

Class of Fire: C (C in a blue circle)
Fires of energized electrical equipment such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets
Extinguisher to Use: ABC Powder

Class of Fire: D (D in a yellow star)
Fires of combustible metals like magnesium, titanium, sodium (often found in chemical laboratories).
Extinguishers to Use: ABC Powder or Carbon Dioxide

Class of Fire: K (K in a black hexagon)
Fires of cooking oils, trans fats (often used in restaurants).
Extinguisher to Use: Wet Chemical

Water Classification

5/21/2019 (Permalink)

Without any kind of warning, disaster can strike your home or business.  Immediate response is crucial especially when it comes to water damages!  There are three different classifications of water that can cause a loss in a home.  The three types of water classification are defined as the following:

Clean water – does not contain waste products and can present a few health risks.  Sources of clean water include burst pipes, defective appliances, hot water heater leaks and rain or snow entering through a leaky roof.

Gray water – carries waste products but does not include human waste or present the hazard of spreading diseases.  Sources of gray water include overflowing washing machines, dishwashers, and bathtubs.

Black water – carries products and disease-causing organisms.  Sources of black water include flood water and sewage backups.  Black water losses pose serious health threats, and the damage is generally more severe.

Tornado Tips from SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

It is important to understand the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning to help protect you and loved ones.

When a tornado watch is issued, this means a tornado is possible in the area.

When a tornado warning is issued, this means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed toward your area.

Tornadoes are dangerous and can be spawned by a thunderstorm or produced as a result of a hurricane.  According to the National Hurricane Center, studies show that more than half of the landfalling hurricanes produce at least one tornado.   If a tornado strikes your home or area, know what to do.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio has provided a few tips to help keep our community safe!

  • Wait for an all-clear announcement from the National Weather Service or local news before leaving your home, business, or shelter.
  • Be very cautious and on the watch for downed utility lines.  Do not approach or touch downed utility lines.
  • Check water heater and appliances for damage.  For safety purposes, use a flashlight, not matches or candles.
  • Use bottled water or boil tap water before drinking until you are told the water supply is safe.
  • Driving may be hazardous due to debris in the streets, downed power lines, and flooding.  If flooding is a potential hazard, stay away from the rivers and streams.
  • Inspect car, home, or business both inside and outside for damage.  List any damages that you can find and document the damages with pictures if possible.
  • Walk through your home or business and conduct an inventory of damaged items and belongings.

Lightning Truths and Myths

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

To find out more information about the myths and the facts about lightning go to www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov

Dealing with lightening damages can be very overwhelming to deal with alone.  Give the team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call! (210) 653-4651.

The Difference Between Mildew and Mold

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Can you tell what the difference between mold and mildew are?  Let SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio help clarify!   The two both have a couple of matching characteristics.   Mold and mildew are both fungi that thrive on moisture, warm areas and can grow on many different surfaces.  However, there are a few differences between the two.

Mildew is a surface fungus that can easily be identified as a patch of gray or white fungus and may turn brown.  It is not as invasive or as troublesome as mold and is a bit easier to eliminate than mold.  Products such as bleach or vinegar should help do the trick to knock it out.

Mold, however, can be hard to spot and be a little trickier.  If you notice a foul smell in your home or business, then there is a chance you have mold hiding around.  The appearance of mold may be green or black.  It can sometimes come across looking like a small patch of dirt or may appear fuzzier or darker than mildew.  If mold is spotted, there is a chance that more mold is hidden and not in sight.

It is important if you spot mold and/or mildew that they get treated immediately.  The faster addressing the issue the less potential damage may be caused in your home or business.  If you have mold concerns in your home or business, give the mold experts a call here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio (210) 653-4651.

Candle Safety Tips

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

There is something calming about candles especially during the holiday season.  They look pretty and enhance the ambiance in a room, they give off a fragrant smell that can be so luring, but they can also be the cause to a house fire.   December has been noted as the peak month of candle fires.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 candle fires started when they were placed to something that can burn, such as furniture, bedding, or decorations.  Review the tips below to prevent any house fires this holiday season:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn
  • Use a sturdy candle holder, that will not tip over easily
  • Put candle holders and a sturdy and unclutter surface
  • Light candles carefully, keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • Do not let the candle burn all the way to the bottom; put it out before it gets too close to the container or holder
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home
  • During a power outage, use a flashlight or battery-operated lighting instead of a candle

Although candles can add to the décor in the room, however, they can also add danger.  Remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite.  Create an environment that is safe for you during this holiday season, use alternatives to prevent any candle fires in homes like using flameless candles.  As always, remember SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is here to help!

Safety in the Kitchen during the Holiday Season

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

December is a time when family and friends gather together to celebrate the glorious time of year.   During this time of year, we are more likely to spend a lot of our time in the kitchen cooking a gourmet family feast or baking delicious cookies.  However, it is extremely important to keep safety at the top of your mind.  If you are not properly prepared in the kitchen, it may lead to being a recipe for disaster.  Kitchen fires around Christmas time are the second most frequently reported accidents right behind Thanksgiving.  To help have a safe and joyous holiday season, follow these tips to help keep your home safe.

  • Stay in the kitchen while the food is cooking, Most kitchen fires occur because the food is left unattended.
  • Keep the cooking range free of clutter.  Even though you may have dishes to prepare, do not overload a cooktop with too many pots and pans.  Trying to cook all your dishes at once could cause grease to accidentally spill onto a range top and cause a fire.
  • Always keep a potholder, oven mitt and lid handy while cooking. If a small fire starts in a pan on the stove, put on a flame-resistant oven mitt and smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan.  Turn off the burner.  Don't remove the lid until the food has cooled.
  • When removing lids on hot pans, tilt them away from you to protect your face and hands from steam.  If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning your or your clothes.
  • Do not wear loose fitting clothing when cooking. Long open sleeves could ignite and catch fire from a gas flame or a hot burner.
  • Keep smoke alarms connected while cooking.  Make sure smoke alarms are installed and working.
  • Unplug small appliances that aren't in use.  Not only will you save the energy, but you will also avoid potential dangers if they were to be turned on accidentally.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency and know how to use it.  Make sure the fire extinguisher is UL listed and rated for grease and electrical fires.

Disasters are never planned.  But SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is always prepared and here to help.  When disaster strikes, give our trained professionals a call (210) 653-4651!

Are You Using Your Fireplace this Holiday Season?

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

As the temperatures drop this December, residents may be turning up the heat by using their fireplaces to keep warm.  To prevent any holiday mishaps be sure you remember a few of these tips about fireplace safety:

Fireplace Safety Tips:

  • Before starting a fire, make sure the damper or flue is open. Keeping this open will draw smoke out of the house. Using a flashlight to look up the chimney can check the damper. Never close the damper until the embers have completely stopped burning
  • Use dry or aged wood in your fire. With dried wood, it burns with less smoke and burns more evenly. If you use wet or green wood, this causes more smoke and contributes to soot buildup in the chimney

  • Smaller pieces of wood positioned on a grate burn faster and produce less smoke

  • Make sure to clean out ashes from any previous fires. The levels of ash at the base of the fireplace should be kept to 1 inch or less. A thicker layer restricts the air supply to logs, resulting in more smoke

  • You should get your chimney check annually by a professional. Even if the chimney is not due for a cleaning, it is very important to check for animal nests or any other blockages that could prevent smoke from escaping

  • The area around your fireplace should be clear of anything that is potentially flammable

  • Never leave the fire in your fireplace unattended. Make sure the fire is out completely before going to bed or leaving the house

  • Install both a smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure to test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year

  • Keep a fire extinguisher on hand

Do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio after dealing with a fire at (210) 653-4651.  Our company has trained technicians with years of experience and certifications to get the job done.   Our team is dedicated to helping you when disaster strikes!

Classes of Water

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Without warning, emergencies can strike.  An immediate response is critical especially when water damage strikes.  Did you know there are different classes of water that can cause a loss in a home?  The classes of water are defined as the following:

Class 1 – A single room is affected, with little to no wet carpet, with water only on surfaces like wood or concrete.

Class 2 – This class effects and the entire room, wetness along the walls (12” or more), and moisture still in the structure.

Class 3 – Ceilings, walls, carpet, and insulation are all saturated with liquid or water. This is often due to water coming from overhead.

Class 4 – Water saturates in materials with very low levels of permeation, like hardwood or stone.

Here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio, we understand that dealing with water damage is highly stressful.  Our trained technicians are equipped with the knowledge and equipment to restore your property to its preloss conditions.  Do not hesitate to give SERVPRO of Victoria a call if you experience any kind of water damage!

Electrical Safety Tips for the Holiday

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

It is the most wonderful time of the year!  The holiday season is in full swing as we are counting down to Christmas.  As holiday preparations are underway and make your safety a priority.  Take a moment and review the electrical safety below to avoid any holiday mishap.

  • Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use
Cracked or damaged sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections may cause a serious shock or start a fire.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets
Overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of holiday fires. Avoid overloading outlets and plug only one high-wattage into each outlet at a time.
  • Keep trees fresh by watering daily
Dry trees are a serious fire hazard.
  • Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources
A heat source that was too close to the decoration was a factor in half of the home fires that began with decorations (NFPA).
  • Protect cords from damage
To avoid shock or fire hazards, cords should never be pinched by furniture, forced into small spaces such as doors and windows, placed under rugs, located near heat sources, or attached by nails or staples.
  • Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking
Unattended cooking equipment is the leading cause of home cooking fires (NFPA).
  • Turn off decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house
turn off decorative holiday lights before going to bed or leaving home. A timer can help make sure this happens.

Each of these tips will help you prevent an electrical fire from starting in your home or business. Now, if the worst happens, and you do sustain damage from a fire, you need the help of professionals to get your home and business straightened out. Call on the fire damage restoration specialists here at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio (210) 653-4651!

Quick Response is Crucial for San Antonio Business Owners

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

The first 24 hours can make the difference between restoring versus replacing your business’ property.  Property damage, equipment damage, document loss, and temporary business closures are just some of the concerns business could possibly experience. Timely response and professional mitigation from a restoration company can alleviate these concerns. Closures for a business does not impact a business owner nor will they cause an impact on customers and employees.  Before there is a possible risk doing further damage by attempting to clean the damage yourself, call SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio, your local water and fire damage cleanup and restoration professionals. You can reach us all day, every day (including holidays) at 210-653-4651. When disaster strikes, our team at SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is prepared to help you.

Keep Pipes from Freezing in San Antonio

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures are dropping, and a freeze may occur over the next few days.  With weather conditions like these, it could potentially wreak havoc on your home if you are not properly prepared. Be proactive this winter and take some precautions to help protect your home and do not let these harsh weather conditions interfere your holiday plans.  Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm insider air to circulate around the pipes. Make sure all exterior pipes are properly insulated.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio values our community. When disaster strikes, SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio is here to help you.  Give our team of professionals a call (210) 653-4651!

Different Types of Smoke

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored to the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.  Give us a call at (210) 653-4651!

Small Water Damages Become Nightmare for Business

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

Our team is dedicated to helping your business!

Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Sugar Land for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Not all hurricanes are destructive or deadly.  But it's always a good idea to be prepared especially during prime time hurricane season. They are known as one of the most violent wind storms and should not be messed with. Know the difference between the stages of hurricanes and damages they may cause.

Hurricane Categories
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale rates a hurricane's intensity using wind speed and storm surge, which is the abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm. The scale also estimates the potential damage and flooding expected along the coast from a hurricane landfall.

Category 1
Sustained winds of 74-85 mph.  Dangerous winds occur and may cause some damage. Damage primarily to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees along with some coastal road flooding and minor pier damage.

Category 2
Winds of  96-110 mph.  Extremely dangerous winds and will cause extensive damage. Roofing, door and window damage to buildings; Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees, mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers.

Category 3
Devastating damage will occur. Winds of 111-129 mph. Structural damage to small residences and utility buildings; foliage blew off trees and large trees blown down; mobile homes destroyed.

Category 4
Catastrophic damage occurs. Sustained winds of 130 - 156 mph. Extensive damage to doors, windows and lower floors of shoreline houses; total roof failures on small residences; shrubs, trees, and all signs blown down; mobile homes completely destroyed.

Category 5
Catastrophic damage occurs.  Winds of 157 mph or higher.  Complete roof failure on many buildings and some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away; severe and extensive window and door damage; mobile homes destroyed.

Does Your Home Have Mold

5/22/2018 (Permalink)

If you see any signs of mold, call SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio today – (210) 653- 4651

Roof Leak

4/23/2018 (Permalink)

After dealing with a cold winter, some of us are looking upon the spring season. As spring has approached us the weather has been warmer and the trees and flowers have begun to bloom, However, springtime always seems to bring plenty of rain and plenty of rain always brings a higher risk of water damage to your home.

With the increase of showers as well as high winds, roof damage may occur or be revealed as water intrudes through your roof and damages your ceilings and walls. To reduce the risk of roof leaks, you should inspect your roof for any damages from the winter and inspect it after every major storm.

The most common cause of roof leaks is a damaged or missing shingle from storms or fallen branches. If you do experience water damage inside your home from the ceiling or wall, you will want to contact a professional from SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio to inspect the damage, remove the water, and remediate the damage.

Myth: If it is not raining, then there is no danger from lighting.
Fact:  Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from rainfall.

Myth: Rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning.  The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not toughing metal.  Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

Myth: “Heat lightning” occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact:  “Heat lightning” is a team used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.

Mold is one of the most challenging issues you can encounter as a property owner. It can be difficult to detect at first, and if left untreated, it has the potential to cause big problems. Once there are signs that mold levels have a certain point, it’s time to consider professional mold remediation.  Below are a few reasons why you should consider mold remediation while dealing with mold in your home or business:

Winterize Your Business

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

The winter months may call for some businesses to take some standard precautionary measures to help protect their company.  These measures include basic maintenance checks and preparation to help ensure your business and employees remain safe.  A few tips include:

  • Check your business property for down tree limbs and branches.  Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure.  Leaves or debris accumulates causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential

Christmas Tree Safety

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

As the holiday song goes “It’s the holiday season, so whoop-de-do!”  During this holiday season, many of us have a beautifully decorated Christmas tree as part of the tradition to the season. It is important that the tree is carefully decorated to ensure a safe holiday season.  Over the years, Christmas tree fires have been responsible for property damage.  Most resulted from electrical malfunctions from Christmas tree lights such as faulty wiring, plugs, or even having the tree placed too close to a candle or fire place.  To help avoid any fire damages, follow these simple steps.

  • Ensure trees are secured and sturdy in the tree stand to prevent them from tipping over
  • Use tested and UL-approved lighting when decorating trees or other holiday decorations
  • Carefully check light strands for frayed, faulty or exposed wiring, broken bulbs or loose bulb connections
  • Make sure to water live trees daily; dried out trees increases fire risk

Holiday Kitchen Safety Tips

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

December is a time when family and friends gather together to celebrate the glorious time of year.   During this time of year, we are more likely to spend a lot of our time in the kitchen cooking a gourmet family feast or baking delicious cookies.  However, it is extremely important to keep safety at the top of your mind.  If you are not properly prepared in the kitchen, it may lead to be a recipe for disaster.  Kitchen fires around Christmas time is the second most frequently reported accidents right behind Thanksgiving.  To help have a safe and joyous holiday season, follow these tips to help keep your home safe.

  • Stay in the kitchen while the food is cooking, Most kitchen fires occur because food is left unattended.
  • Keep the cooking range free of clutter.  Even though you may have dishes to prepare, do not overload a cook top with too many pots and pans.

Smoke and Soot Clean Up in Northeast San Antonio, Texas

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Victoria will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Thanksgiving around the corner and most of America starts to prepare for one of the most important meals of the year!  Typically, the most common dishes found on a Thanksgiving table are a turkey.  Most people prepare turkeys for the big occasion.  But did you know that there can be some dangers with preparing a turkey in your own home? Cooking is the leading cause of house fires according to Ready.gov.  Be extra careful with turkey fryers. There are a few house fires that take place on Thanksgiving due to the fact that some safety precautions were not being considered.  SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio  has provided some helpful tips to use while preparing a turkey to prevent any mishaps from happening.  Below are a few key messages to follow to help ensure the safety of your home:

  • Only use turkey fryers outdoors; away from home or building and any flammable materials.
  • Keep children and pets a safe distance away from the fryer when in use and for several hours after cooking.
  • Do not leave the fryer unattended; temperature should also be monitored closely.
  • If any smoke, at all, comes from the heating pot of oil, turn the burner off immediately as oil may be overheating.
  • Cover any skin that is exposed; it is encouraged to use a pair of gloves that is designed for high heat.
  • Follow the manufacture's recommendation for the amount of oil to add.  Do not over fill the fryer.
  • Be prepared - consider purchasing a fire extinguisher for safety precautions.

A Word from our Owners

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

Friends,

To say that the effects from Harvey have been a tragic nightmare would be an understatement. Whether you've been directly affected or helping friends and family, it has been the worst disaster our city has ever seen for most of us.

As the water recedes and our neighbors, friends and family are left with the aftermath, I want to be helpful and share some tips on what to do and what not to do. I am sending this out, not as a plug for our company, but to try and be helpful to all that need help, or have or will have questions. Mark and I have been inundated with calls, texts and FB messages and we can't keep up with them all as it is probably the same for you. So, please read and I hope you will find it helpful. Please feel free to share this post.

Those of you who know me, know that my husband, Mark Hart, & I own a few SERVPRO franchises in Texas; Sugar Land, Victoria and NE San Antonio. Two of the three locations of our franchises are in the communities directly impacted by Harvey. Our business is helping with the clean up after water, fire and mold damage. SERVPRO is a national franchise system and in devastation such as this, deploys hundreds of teams to help our communities. If you have confirmed flood or wind driven rain causing water damage, and would like our help, please call our office and ask to be put on our Storm Response Team list; we can have your friend, family or neighbor added to the Storm Response Team to get in line for the cleanup that will have to happen. Our number is 281-313-1338.

The advantages of getting on our list are these:

1. SERVPRO has over 1700 franchises in the country and there will probably be hundreds of SERVPRO teams coming in to help. Getting on our Storm Team Response list will help expedite your getting the help you need as lists will be divided up among the participating SERVPRO franchises.
2. SERVPRO helps manage all jobs through their Storm Teams. If you run into any problems with the franchise that is doing your work, they take action to help resolve it.
3. Standard Industry pricing is used by all SERVPRO's for mitigation services. We have a National reputation to uphold so they monitor this closely.

Having said that, I'm sure you can understand that everyone in our industry is overwhelmed with calls for help. Please understand that a lot of our own employees have been affected and crews traveling from out of town are trickling into Houston (and Victoria) as they are able. There are still areas around town that are not accessible and in danger of more flooding due to rivers cresting and levees failing. (I, myself, am confined to my house as my small neighborhood street is flooded - there is only one way in or out).

Please be understanding to the companies and their staff of people that are trying to help you. Our crews and administrators will be working long days and nights for probably months.

There are a lot of other good companies out there and there are a few things to watch for. BEWARE of fly by night companies that are in it to make a quick buck and leave town. There are some bad apples out there that give our industry a bad wrap.

Things to know:

1. Final billing should be provided once work is completed and is usually put into a line item estimating software program called, Xactimate. This is the industries standard price list used by most Insurance companies.
2. You will be paying out of pocket for the clean up services as rising water is not covered on your normal property insurance policy. In most cases, you will be asked to pay 50% to get started and 50% upon completion. DO NOT PAY 100% UP FRONT.
3. If you have flood insurance, they likely will not cover the entire cost for the cleanup and repairs. Get a copy of your final line item bill (an Xactimate) estimate and submit to your insurance for the maximum reimbursement amount they will cover.
4. Check your policy for wind driven rain coverage, if your home suffered that kind of damage as well.
5. Apply for help from FEMA. I understand they are covering hotel expenses up to 30 days and other essentials.

If you choose to start your own cleanup, keep this in mind; You are dealing contaminated water that has now contaminated your home. The following are some tips to consider:

1. Porous materials must be discarded. All flooring, drywall, cabinets, insulation need to be removed at least up to 12" above the water line. However, industry standard is up to two feet above the affected area as a lot of times you cannot always see how far up the water may have traveled. Wet wicks to dry - I highly recommend removing 2' above the water line.
2. Removal should be taken down to the studs, disinfected, then dried with professional drying equipment.
3. Any fabric material, such as rugs, couches, chairs, etc. should be replaced. DON'T TRY TO SAVE THEM as they are contaminated with bacteria from the rising water.
4. Furniture legs can be replaced. If you are sure that the fabric part of it is not affected, you could save your furniture pieces by just replacing the legs.
5. Watch out for electrical and plumbing if you do your own demo. Your power and water should be shut down while performing demolition. Be careful not to cut electrical or plumbing lines - you don't want to add on to the expense of your repairs.

MOLD IS LIKELY TO GROW IN THESE CONDITIONS. TEXAS law requires that companies are licensed to do any MOLD REMEDIATION. However, sometimes in a disaster situation, the State could decide to relax their requirements. Refer to the TEXAS DEPARTMENT of STATE HEALTH SERVICES; www.dshs.texas.gov.There is some good additional information on there about flood water damage.

We are praying for our entire community during this mess. I hope this is helpful information for all of you. If you have questions, feel free to call our office, 281-313-1338.

Love to all,

Natalie & Mark Hart

6/27/2017 (Permalink)

Summertime is prime time to travel and a survey shows about one-third of American families are taking the opportunity this summer to go on a summer vacation.  But in case of an unexpected disaster, be sure to have your home prepared.   Below are a list of things to do to make sure your home is secure when you're off spending time with your family on vacation.

Make arrangements with an Emergency Contact:

  • Close friend or neighbor

  • Collect mail - burglars looks for home with overflowing mail

  • Consider getting motion sensor lights, this way, if anyone gets too close to your home, lights will automatically turn on.
  • Purchasing an electric timer may be helpful for your home.  This allows you to save energy and keep your electricity bill cost lower.
  • Keep watch, use the emergency contact above to keep an eye on your home and check it each day to make sure everything is okay.
  • Security system is one of the best ways to protect your home while on vacation

Taking Additional Precautions:

  • Shut off gas and water at the meter, supply tank or appliance
  • Turn off all water valves to any the appliance with waterline
  • Unplug all electronics to prevent any electrical shortages
  • Make sure smoke detectors working properly before leaving
  • Adjust your thermostats to 75-82 degrees, this will help control air usage.
  • Be careful what you say.  Leaving for vacation is exciting but saying too much may create your home as a target for invasion.  Resist the temptation to broadcast your vacation on social media - tell your friends after you return.
  • Tell your alarm company- alert the company you will be out of town, especially on an extended trip.
  • Lock everything down and secure valuables.

Don't let your summer vacation turn into a water staycation.  If an unexpected water event or disaster happens, you know who to call.  Give SERVPRO of Northeast San Antonio a call (210) 653-4651.  We're always prepared when disaster strikes!

Does your Home have Mold?

5/8/2017 (Permalink)
